The new year generally brings dreams of a cleaner, more organized living space. Real Simple has compiled a list of 101 new uses for everyday things including- lemon, newspaper, olive oil, dryer sheets, coffee filters, velcro, vinegar, baking soda, ziploc bags, and salt.

The additional information about the everyday items has great trivia to impress your friends. For example – “Not only does baking soda neutralize odiferous fatty acids but it also attacks grease by turning it into―believe it or not―soap,” says the University of Pittsburgh’s Wolke. Fact: More than 100 tons of the refrigerator staple were used to clean the Statue of Liberty’s inner copper walls during its 1986 restoration.

One idea for dryer sheets- “ Freshen smelly shoes. Insert a dryer sheet into the offending pair and let sit overnight.”
